Matthew 5:13
"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless."
Light
Matthew 5:14-16
"You are the light of the world - like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts in under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father."
Salt, as a seasoning, affects others around it. When it is put on food, it gives the food flavour. If we are so blended with the world around us, then we will have little use, just like the salt that has lost its flavour.
Light gives sight to those who walk in the dark. As disciples of Christ, we are reflectors of his glory, and we shine his light to the lost. Those who are lost, who stumble in the darkness, often look to Christians, whether consciously or not. And sometimes, we, consciously or not, are the ones who deprive them of the light, when we:
1. Keeping quiet when we should speak
If you see someone who is being bullied, or verbally abused, would you be someone who stands up for him?
If you hear people slandering God's name, would you be someone who stops them?
If you see someone who is depressed, would you go and comfort them?
2. Going along with the crowd
Even when you know that what the clique is doing, or will be doing is wrong, would you still follow them?
3. Denying the light
If people are making fun of Christians, would you be proud to still admit in front of them that you are a Christian?
4. Letting sin dim our light
If you know the school doesn't approve inappropriate hairstyles, would you still keep one?
5. Not explaining our light to others
If someone asks about your faith, would share to him or her, or evade the subject?
6. Ignoring the needs of others
If you see someone who did not bring enough money for a meal, would you go and lend him or her your money?
Even as Christians, it is sometimes easy to fall into this without realizing it. We should place our light on a stand, where it will give light to everyone, instead of hiding it under a basket where no one can see.
God has called us to be insulators, not isolated. Let us change our surrounding, and continue being a reflector of His light.
Thank you for taking the time to read this extremely wordy post. I hope you will be able to apply it into your lives. God bless you, enjoy the rest of the day with Him :D
Cheers,
Isaac
God is the voice crying out to the lost, and we shall carry His words...
